Basic Things Every Homeowner Should Know

By Kayla Beirne

You  don't  need a professional for every project and repair. In this article, we'll go over basic things every homeowner should know. With the right equipment and a little patience, you can be your home's own handyperson.

Unclogging Drains

With  all  the  products  and  grime home water fixtures endure, they  could  accumulate  some  buildup  over  time. Buildup can cause   inconvenient   clogs,   but   fortunately,  you  can  unclog drains without using harsh chemicals.

Keep   a   mini   plunger   and   drain   snake   in   bathrooms  or under faucets. Use baking soda, boiling water, and vinegar to get rid of any putrid smells after unclogging.

Properly Adjusting the Thermostat

Programming  a  thermostat  correctly looks different in every home. Keep your home energy efficient and comfortable by adjusting its thermostat to 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer.

Homes  that  are  susceptible  to  extremely  cold  temperatures  should  always  maintain  at least 55 degrees on the thermostat. In especially hot and humid areas, homeowners should avoid having it exceed 80 degrees with the air conditioning running to prevent mold issues.

Decorating Your Place Safely

There   are   plenty    of    decorating    mistakes     homeowners should  avoid  making. Amid the fun of embellishing your home, you may overlook the logistics of your decor.

You     might     experience    difficulty    securing   your   favorite photos and art to walls. Equip your home with wall anchors and picture  hangers  so  you  can  fix  your  art  to  any  wall without damaging it.

Changing the AC and Furnace Filter

To  avoid  insufficient  heating  or  cooling, you must change the air filter on your home’s central heating and cooling system. Do this every one to three months.

These  are  basic  things  every  homeowner  should  know  to  ensure  adequate  airflow  and  air quality. Without doing so, you can breathe in dust and debris that’s accumulated in your filters.

Fixing a Running Toilet

Constantly  running  toilets and toilets that don't flush aren't just irritating they're huge wastes of water. Avoid a steep water bill by familiarizing yourself with the flush valve assembly.

You  can  find  this  when  you  lift  the  top of the toilet tank. While you can often fix this with a quick part repositioning, severe toilet issues require replacement.
