Is Crypto Safe in the Metaverse?

Broadly speaking, the technologies in "the metaverse" can include virtual reality-characterized by persistent virtual worlds (VR as in Virtual Reality) that continue to exist even when you're not playing-as well as augmented reality (AR) that combines aspects of the digital and physical worlds.

However, it doesn't require that those spaces be exclusively accessed via VR or AR. Virtual worlds-such as aspects of Fortnite that can be accessed through PCs, game consoles, and even phones-have started referring to themselves as "the metaverse."

Decentraland was one of the first players in the metaverse. The platform launched in 2017 with an initial coin offering of $26 million (raising 86,206 ETH) to provide a comprehensive and immersive 3D metaverse. Since its debut, Decentraland has been the longest-existing and operational metaverse project to date.

Decentraland bills itself as "the virtual destination for digital assets to buy and sell LAND, estates, avatar wearables and names in the Decentraland Marketplace."

Sandbox is another platform in the metaverse. A digital piece of real estate in The Sandbox that players can buy to build experiences on top of is called LAND. Once you own a LAND, you will be able to populate it with games and assets. Each LAND is a unique (non-fungible) token on the public Ethereum blockchain (ERC-721).

Dawn
You're a cartoon.

Nicole
I am. This is crazy.

Dawn 
You're a cartoon. Look at yourself. Well, I'm a cartoon, too.

Nicole
Oh, my God. I'm thinner.

Dawn
How did this happen?

Nicole
Holy crap. I don't even have to go to the gym anymore. This is amazing. 

Dawn
We're in the metaverse. What? We're in the metaverse.

Nicole
We're a cartoon.

Dawn
But that's what the metaverse is. You can be anything you want. You can be skinny. My wrinkles are gone.

Nicole
I look great. I look great. Look at this. My hair's all brushed and everything.

Dawn
This is unbelievable. I didn't even have makeup on for this set.

Nicole
So can I do anything I want to do here?

Dawn
I think so.

Nicole
Like anything?

Dawn
Anything. But you can't touch or feel anything. But you could pretty much do anything. You could smash yourself into, like, a little tiny piece and then pop back up.

Nicole
Oh, can I steal crypto?

Dawn
Can you steal crypto?

Nicole
I can do that from here, right? It's just fake. It's fake, right? It's fake money.

Dawn
I don't think you can steal crypto in the metaverse. Crypto is how you buy things in the metaverse.

Nicole
I'm saying you can do anything in the cartoon version of yourself, right?

Dawn
Yeah, except that crypto is secure, right? So far. Yeah. But in the real world, you know, people can steal your money, but in the fake or I mean, metaverse world, crypto is secure, but that's how you buy things. In the metaverse, you use crypto.

Nicole
This is what we're going to be talking about then, right? We're cartoons.

Dawn
Yeah, but what do you need to buy in the metaverse? I mean, do you need to eat in the metaverse?

Nicole
I need to buy real state in the metaverse.

DawnOK, so you can live in it.

Nicole
Hypothetically speaking.

Dawn
No. So you can advertise from it. Oh, that's what people are going to want. 

Nicole
That's why they're buying all these mansions. 

Dawn
And it's all advertising. It's all to sell real world products. That's what the metaverse is like. I'm coming into the metaverse and I look freaking awesome and I'm going to try on this shirt and I look even more awesome in it. So I'm going to buy this shirt and it's going to come to my house in real life, and I'm going to pay with crypto.

Nicole
OK, all right. This is fair. All right. I'm I'm down. I'm in. I'm 100%. I'm hip with the drive. We got this.
